Application

In industry, 1,4-butanediol was produced by combining acetylene with two molecules of formaldehyde to produce 1,4-butlenediol. It can also be obtained by anhydride or acid hydrogenation of succinic or maleic acid.

1,4-butanediol is mainly used as a solvent for the production of plastic and fiber and raw materials for other chemical products.

In the presence of phosphoric acid, 1,4-butanediol water to lose tetrahydrofuran (THF); 1,4- γ -butyrolactone (GBL). Both of them are quite important industrial solvents and synthetic precursors. In addition, engineering plastic butyl acid (PBT) also requires 1,4-butanediol.
